Adopt-a-Street Program
The City of Falls Church's Department of Environmental Services created an Adopt-a-Spot/Adopt-a-Street program to encourage citizen participation in litter clean ups of designated areas in the city at regualr intervals. Individuals, organizations, or businesses may agree to keep a designated area of cleared of litter for a two-year period.
Adoptable locations include parks, vacant lots, parking lots, walkways, median strips, streets, campuses, public grounds, or other littered areas.
In late 2001, a group of interested residents committed themselves to this program and formed The Madison's Adopt-a-Street group. An agreement was signed with the City of Falls Church in March 2002. Although the agreement states that we would provide 4 litter pick ups annually for a two-year period, we decided to perform these every other month (weather permitting).
Our group, which consists of approximately 12 volunteers, is responsible for Roosevelt Blvd. — between Wilson Blvd. and the light at Roosevelt St. (adjacent to our picnic area). No condo funds are used for the group's orange tees/hats and related clean up supplies.
Although we take this endeavor seriously (especially the street safety aspect), our litter pick ups also have a great team-building component. Making a positive difference in our "neighborhood" can be fun.
Check out the 2010 schedule. New volunteers are always welcome!
